The most important contribution of ONGC, however, is its self-reliance and development of core competence in E&P activities at a globally competitive level. Today, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) is, the leader in Exploration & Production (E&P) activities in India contributing 72 per cent to India’s total production of crude oil and 48 per cent of natural gas. ONGC’s quest for energy goes deeper than setting new benchmarks in deep-water drilling in the Krishna Godavari Basin or finding new frontiers of energy. Global decline in crude prices notwithstanding, we have taken significant investment decisions diligently and aggressively, reversing the production trend in offshore. And now we are venturing into deeper offshore plays in our quest for energy security. It is this journey that has placed us among FortuneWorld’s Most Admired Companies” and ranked us 3rd in the E&P industry globally on the Platts Top 250 Rankings 2014. Three indigenous oil and gas exploration firms -- Optimum, Afren and Lekoil -- yesterday announced a significant oil find in Oil Prospecting Lease, OPL 310, offshore Nigeria. The latest find, which has great potential to yield commercial oil, was made at Ogo-1 well after drilling 10,402 feet. The discovery has the potential to significantly boost Nigeria's oil reserve which currently stands at 37 billion barrels. Afren Plc said it had drilled a well to a total measured depth of 10,518ft (10,402ft true vertical depth subsea), and had encountered a gross hydrocarbon section of 524ft, with 216ft of net stacked pay. The firm added that the well was initially targeted to yield 78 million barrels of oil equivalent but based on evidence to date, targeted resources were likely to be significantly in excess of previous estimates. The company said further evaluation using wireline log analysis was currently underway prior to extending the well to a total measured depth of 11,800ft (11,684ft true vertical depth subsea) to target further high potential zones. "The Ogo-1 discovery, testing a four-way dipclosed structure in the Turonian, Cenomanian and Albian sandstone reservoirs, confirms the extension of the same Cretaceous sandstones that have yielded other significant discoveries along the West African Transform Margin," the company said in a statement. It added that: "Following the completion of drilling operations at Ogo-1, the partners intend to drill a planned side-track, Ogo-1 ST, which will test a new play of stratigraphically trapped sediments that pinch-out onto the basement high targeting 124 mmboe of gross P50 prospective resources." The completion of exploration and eventual commercial production would be beneficial to not only the Federal Government but also other stakeholders, including Optimum, Afren and Lekoil that have different participating and economic interests in the oil block. Specifically, participating interest in the block is Optimum on 60 per cent, Afren on 22.86 per cent and Lekoil on 17.14 per cent. Economic interest is Optimum on 30 per cent, Afren on 40 per cent and Lekoil on 30 per cent. The Chief Executive of Afren Plc, Mr. Osman Shahenshah, said the discovery of oil in the Ogo-1 well opened up a new oil basin in an under-explored region and represented a possible extension of the West African Transform Margin. According to Shahenshah, based on evidence to date, targeted resources are likely to be significantly in excess of previous estimates, with some highpotential zones still to be drilled. He said: "We look forward to working with our partners to realise the full potential of Ogo and our additional prospects on the license. "The Ogo-1 exploration success follows a series of recent discoveries, Okoro Field Extension, Ebok North Fault Block and Okwok in Nigeria and Simrit-2 and Simrit-3 on the Ain Sifni Block in the Kurdistan region of Iraq." Nigeria has not made significant oil and gas reserves in recent times as a result of low investment which is said to be a direct function of outdated legislations in the industry. For instance, the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, targeted to make the industry more attractive to local and foreign investors, has been with the National Assembly in the last five years. Consequently, many investors have gone to invest in other countries that offer competitive legislations, incentives and policies. A top official of Stumberger confirmed at a recent industry conference in Lagos that many nations in the Gulf of Guinea, especially Angola, have attracted a lot of investments in the past few years. This, according to him, has culminated in the making of commercial oil and gas finds that are capable of boosting reserves and ranking of Angola as a major producer. The official tasked stakeholders, especially legislators, to make progress in order to complete work on the important bill targeted at restructuring the nation's oil and gas industry as well as attracting more investments to boost reserves as well as production capacity. However, a Lagosbased lawyer, Mr. Emeka Okwuosa, said the new PIB was a step in the right direction, a watershed reform that would change the landscape of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. Okwuosa said the future was promising because the new PIB would be a good and excellent law, open up investment opportunities, unbundle the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, for better performance and result, and create a transparent, accountable and corruptfree energy regime.

Aker Wirth GmbH - Mobile Tunnel Miner Revolution in underground mining Together with Rio Tinto, one of the world's largest mining companies, Aker Wirth developed a new, innovative tunnel boring system for underground tunneling and mining and the Mobile Tunnel Miner (MTM). The machine concept combines the flexibility of a roadheader with the robustness of a tunnel boring machine. The knowledge gained from a previous version developed and tested already by Aker Wirth is also exploited. The self-propelled machine moves on a crawler and a walking mechanism and excavates rock with six powerful hydraulically actuated arms fitted with disc cutters. The muck is conveyed to the rear of the machine by a loading apron with loading disks and via a chain conveyor where it is loaded. This new tunneling system is part of Rio Tinto's Mine of the Future™ programme and will be tested in a full-scale trial at the Rio Tinto Northparkes copper mine in Australia this year. Performance The MTM 6 sets new standards in mining development. In comparison to drill and blast, the MTM 6 is designed to more than double current performance with a potential tunneling rate of of 10 m per day. Energy efficiency With undercutting technology, the MTM 6 is especially efficient with tunneling in hard rock (up to max. 300 MPa). The considerably lower tensile strength of the rock when compared to compressive strength is exploited in this respect. The roller cutters are positioned at a slight angle to the cutter arms, thus undercutting the rock and removing pieces about the size of the palm of a hand. The energy required for undercutting is about half that used for conventional disc cutters on traditional tunnel boring machines. Flexibility & mobility The Mobile Tunnel Miner 6 is able to cut rectangular or horseshoe-shaped cross-sections in addition to circular tunnels with a bore diameter of up to 6 m. This permits the direct boring of the desired tunnel shape, whereas the lower part of a round cross section usually needs to be backfilled where a conventional tunnel boring machine is used. With a flexible bore diameter of up to 6 m, the self-propelled Mobile Tunnel Miner can be used for a variety of applications. The machine is also an innovation in terms of its mobility: it can move flexibly forward using a walking mechanism and backward with a crawler. Thanks to several swivel joints, the turning radius of the 75 m long machine is only 30 m. This means it can master considerably tighter curves than a classic tunnel boring machine which has a turning radius of approximately 500 m under comparable conditions of use. Safety In contrast to drill and blast, which up until now has been the usual method employed in rock of this strength, tunneling with the MTM requires considerably less work from personnel at the tunnel face. The machine is operated from a central control cabin located on the machine itself. The high degree of automation minimises contact between personnel and both moving components and rock. Thanks to its flexibility, the MTM can be easily driven away from the tunnel face for maintenance purposes, which also contributes to the safety of operating personnel. "We will revolutionise safety and efficiency in underground mining with the new Mobile Tunnel Miner", says Einar Brønlund, CEO at Aker Wirth with absolute conviction. "This innovative technology will improve health, safety and environmental protection significantly and makes working conditions more attractive." About Aker Wirth Aker Wirth is one of the leading equipment suppliers, delivering core components for the oil and gas industry as well as mining and civil construction products for the industry. Since 1895, Aker Wirth has been supporting the establishment of a modern and efficient development of natural resources and infrastructure, promoting growth and improving the standard of living. In 2010 and 2011, Aker Wirth was awarded for an outstanding personnel management and in 2009 and 2011 for innovative products and solutions. What is OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING? What does OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING mean? OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING meaning - OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING definition - OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Offshore outsourcing is the practice of hiring an external organization to perform some business functions ("Outsourcing") in a country other than the one where the products or services are actually developed or manufactured ("Offshore"). It can be contrasted with offshoring, in which a company moves itself entirely to another country, or where functions are performed in a foreign country by a foreign subsidiary. Opponents point out that the practice of sending work overseas by countries with higher wages reduces their own domestic employment and domestic investment. Many customer service jobs as well as jobs in the information technology sectors (data processing, computer programming, and technical support) in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom - have been or are potentially affected The widespread use and availability of the Internet has enabled individuals and small businesses to contract freelancers from all over the world to get projects done at a lower cost due to lower wages and property prices. Crowdsourcing systems such as Mechanical Turk and CrowdFlower have added the element of scalability, allowing businesses to outsource information tasks across the Internet to thousands of workers. This trend runs in parallel with the tendency towards outsourcing in larger corporations, and may serve to strengthen small business' capacity to compete with their larger competitors capable of setting up offshore locations, or of arriving at major contracts with offshore companies. On the other hand, according to Gartner, it also helped with accessibility to labor resources across the world, regardless of company size. It gave rise to business models such as Remote In-Sourcing that allow companies to tap into resources found abroad, without losing control over security of product quality. The resulting ability to work remotely and online, will continue to have a huge impact on the overall development of the global economy, for small companies and for large corporations. There are different views on the impact of offshore outsourcing on the various societies affected, which reflects the attitude of Protectionism versus Free Trade. Some see it as a potential threat to the domestic job market in the developed world and ask for government protective measures (or at least closer scrutiny of existing trade practices), while others, including the countries who receive the work, see it as an opportunity. In fact, offshore outsourcing has led to Domestic factories and companies closing down leaving tens of thousands of U.S. workers jobless while underdeveloped countries such as Brazil, Turkey, etc. begin to flourish. Free-trade advocates suggest economies as a whole will obtain a net benefit from labor offshoring, but it is unclear if the displaced receive a net benefit. Many companies offshore outsource because the wages are cheaper in other areas. This is beginning to create a conflict because many wages overseas are raising. For example, a study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that Chinese wages were almost tripled in the seven years following 2002. The wage increases could change the set up of offshore outsourcing in years to come. One issue offshoring of technical services has brought more attention to is the value of education as an alleged solution to trade-related displacements. Education may no longer be a comparative advantage of high-wage nations because the cost of education may be lower in the nations involved in the controversy. While it is true that education is usually considered helpful to competitiveness in general, an "education arms race" with low-wage nations may not pay off.

Children of Piha and Karekare talk about the threat of seabed mining off their beach. The Government has issued exploration licences for seabed mining just off the majority of the North Island's west coast. Companies are about to apply for licences to mine. If this goes ahead, millions of tonnes of black sand will be dug up, destroying the seabed ecology, threatening the endangered maui's dolphin, surf breaks and causing coastal erosion. All for no maximum 5% revenue for NZ, and foreign-owned companies. It's not too late to stop this. Say no. http://www.kasm.org.nz Many thanks to our suppliers: Gavin & Matt @ Rocket Rentals, Jerry Roelants, Dennis Thompson @ the Dolly Shop, Brian Harris and Fergus Milner as well as our great volunteer crew and the fabulous children of Piha.

You don’t get much for a pound these days but Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) PLC (LON:EOG) has shelled out a nominal quid for Shale Petroleum (UK) Limited. With it come Shale’s equity interests in the PEDL299 and PEDL343 exploration licences awarded in the 14th UK Landward licensing round, thus doubling Europa’s stakes in those licences to 33.32% and 45.0% respectively. Shale’s parent company has changed strategy in the wake of the precipitous decline in the oil price, and decided to remain focused on North America, where the company is domiciled, which is how Europa came to pick up the stakes so cheaply. For Europa, the strategy is different. “We have an established exploration and production business here in the UK,” McKay told Proactive Investors. “For us, in times of capital constraint we prefer to focus on areas where we have expertise and a position,” McKay said. “We already know there is gas ‘on structure’ [onPEDL343]; the question is: can we flow at a commercial rate?” McKay said. As for PEDL299, this was discovered in 1919 in the first ever exploration well in the UK, and the plan here is to use modern techniques to see if the company can achieve a commercial oil flow rate.

What is GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING? What does GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING mean? GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING meaning - GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING definition - GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. Geotechnical engineering is important in civil engineering, but also has applications in military, mining, petroleum and other engineering disciplines that are concerned with construction occurring on the surface or within the ground. Geotechnical engineering uses principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions and materials; determine the relevant physical/mechanical and chemical properties of these materials; evaluate stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits; assess risks posed by site conditions; design earthworks and structure foundations; and monitor site conditions, earthwork and foundation construction. A typical geotechnical engineering project begins with a review of project needs to define the required material properties. Then follows a site investigation of soil, rock, fault distribution and bedrock properties on and below an area of interest to determine their engineering properties including how they will interact with, on or in a proposed construction. Site investigations are needed to gain an understanding of the area in or on which the engineering will take place. Investigations can include the assessment of the risk to humans, property and the environment from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, soil liquefaction, debris flows and rockfalls. A geotechnical engineer then determines and designs the type of foundations, earthworks, and/or pavement subgrades required for the intended man-made structures to be built. Foundations are designed and constructed for structures of various sizes such as high-rise buildings, bridges, medium to large commercial buildings, and smaller structures where the soil conditions do not allow code-based design. Foundations built for above-ground structures include shallow and deep foundations. Retaining structures include earth-filled dams and retaining walls. Earthworks include embankments, tunnels, dikes and levees, channels, reservoirs, deposition of hazardous waste and sanitary landfills. Geotechnical engineering is also related to coastal and ocean engineering. Coastal engineering can involve the design and construction of wharves, marinas, and jetties. Ocean engineering can involve foundation and anchor systems for offshore structures such as oil platforms. The fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology are closely related, and have large areas of overlap. However, the field of geotechnical engineering is a specialty of engineering, where the field of engineering geology is a specialty of geology.
